Last year I embarked on an experiment with a Baritone Guitar. I started with a 6 string “Tic Tac” base, restrung it and tried a couple different tunings. I finally decided on ADGCEA which puts it halfway between a stand guitar and a bass. I’ve been playing in “The Band” for several months and continue to get a lot of comments about the great sound (not my great playing).
The experiment guitar is a real cheapo, got it new and delivered for only $490. It a piece of plywood with a neck an pickups. With the Baritone experiment pronounced a sucess, I started looking at making a nice one.
Unfortunately, had my heart set on a gretsch Jet, and Gretsch don’t make a “Pro” line model like the cheapo. So this short scale Bass is going to become a donor, and I have a fun custom/conversion project ahead of me.
It’s a beauty, chambered Mahogany body, bound headstock and neck and a sexy contoured body. I almost feel sorry sacrificing it, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. It’s gonna be a beaut!
